# Reveal content one step at a time

Fragments are elements in your presentation that are stepped through one by one – like sub-steps within a slide. To turn elements into fragments, start by activating the fragment mode which is available in the slide options menu:

For movement between two versions of a slide, use [Auto-animate](/docs/auto-animate) instead. To change how complete slides enter and leave, use [slide transitions](/docs/slide-transitions).

Once in this mode you can click on any element to turn it into a fragment. You can also click on the element in the left sidebar if it's hard to reach visually.

## Removing fragments

Click on a fragment again to undo it and return the element to its original state.

## Fragment order

The order that fragments will appear in is indicated by the index on top of the element. Hovering over a fragment reveals controls that can be used to adjust the order. If you give two fragments the same index, they will appear at the same time.

## Fragment styles

By default, fragments fade in when stepped through. Select the ellipsis icon beside the index to choose another behavior. Learn more about [fragment styles](https://slides.com/news/fragment-styles).
